Spindrift describes fine spray lifted from wave tops by strong winds. This effect is also used for loose snow blown across open ground by winter winds. Sailors and coastal dwellers commonly use the term spindrift to describe this phenomenon. The word originates from the Scots term spyn-drift, meaning to spin and drift. Spindrift remains closely linked to stormy seas and windy weather conditions.
