CSIC is one of the very old institutions in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata). It was founded in 1926 by some of the great Calcuttans of that time, the Nobel Laureate Sir C V Raman and the former President of India Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan.
"The Club was a pioneering establishment not only as a ‘home-away-from-home’ for all the South Indian Population of the city of Kolkata but also in encouraging their literary and cultural faculties, which were so much essential to bring together and strengthen their patriotic thoughts. This was the need of the country then and the Club served this cause with dedication. It was almost after the Independence that many clubs and associations branched-out of this great institution. The CSIC is therefore rightly the heritage and mother organization for all the later South Indian establishments in Kolkata.
For the last 8 decades the Club, apart from encouraging cultural and recreational activities amongst its members and those of its sister Associations, has been providing facilities for medical consultation by eminent medical professionals free of charge. It has also been in the distinguished service of offering financial assistance by way of scholarship to meritorious and needy students of various schools in the city to help them pursue their academic career. The Club has been in the forefront in organizing relief measures at times of natural calamities. One of the Club’s avowed objectives is to serve the underprivileged sections of the society and continuously expand its gamut of welfare activities.
The Club has a well stocked library of old and modern books on all subjects covering literature to science, history to poetry, politics to sports, mythology to modern cinema for all ages. It also has a reading room providing all English and vernacular newspapers and magazines. The Library named rightly after Dr.S.Radhakrishnan is one of the most visited sections of the Club. Unfortunately on account of restricted space and facility, the library is denied additional storage and reading tables.
While the services to the Society by the Club have been true to the noble and just purposes enshrined in the preamble of the Club, various operational issues over the years have considerably weakened the finances of the institution threatening the content and extent of its services. The mounting expenditures in recent years, even in normal operation and maintenance (O&M) of the Club is compelling additional fund raising efforts as an essential activity of the Club.
The sixty year old building housing the Club’s premises is also in a very dilapidated condition. The distressed structure is ailing for repairs and rehabilitation for quite sometime now. The canteen is poor for want of space and hygienic conveniences. So is the condition of the library, indoor games section, medical examination rooms and so on.
With shrinking resources on the one-hand and the need to keep its social obligations with added requirements of modernizing the Club to fulfill the aspirations of the youth on the other, the Club is presently in an urgent requirements of certain revival measures for augmenting and rejuvenating the infra-structure and finances of the institution. The Late P Ramamoorthy, our Ex-President was a person with a lot of concern for the welfare of the Club. He was always thinking of how to better the facilities offered by the Club. His dream was to have a State of Art building for the Club which could include all modern amenities for the members. It is our endeavour to work towards fulfilling his vision and dream.
We earnestly appeal to your esteemed organization to extend your goodwill and support for this deserving cause as leading SPONSOR, of this Mega Musical Event. In reciprocation of your kind gesture, we would extend to you a few promotional avenues as proposed in the attachment."
